چکیده

The use microalgae biomass for the production of biofuels has received great attention in the last decades. Microalgae biofuels could be important alternative to conventional biofuels since microalgae could be produced at high rates without the need of neither arable land, potable water or competition with food. However, the high energy intensive harvesting processes are limiting the commercial production of microalgae biofuels. In this study, Electro-Coagulation (EC) was used for harvesting the freshwater microalga Chlorella vulgaris and the marine microalga Nannochloropsis sp. The results show that EC could be an alternative to the conventional harvesting processes since it is efficient and produces good quality biomass with low energy requirements. Cristina T. Influence of starch on microalgal biomass recovery, settleability and biogas production.

In the context of wastewater treatment with microalgae cultures, coagulation-flocculation followed by sedimentation is one of the suitable options for microalgae harvesting. This process is enabled by the addition of chemicals (e.g. iron). However, in a biorefinery perspective, it is important to avoid possible contamination of downstream products caused by chemicals addition. The aim of this s...

Effective harvesting of microalgae by coagulation–flotation

This study developed a coagulation-flotation process for microalgae Chlorella sp. XJ-445 harvesting, which was composed of algal surface modification by combined use of Al3+ and cetyltrimethylammonium bromide (CTAB) and followed dispersed bubble flotation. Dissolved organic matter (DOM) in the medium was firstly characterized and mainly consisted of hydrophilic low molecular weight molecules. T...

Biomass production and identification of suitable harvesting technique for Chlorella sp. MJ 11/11 and Synechocystis PCC 6803

Microalgae that can grow fast and convert solar energy into chemical energy efficiently are being considered as a promising feedstock of renewable biofuel. Mass production of microalgal oil faces a number of technical barriers that make the current production of biodiesel economically unfeasible. Small size (≈1-20 μm) and negatively charged surface of the microalgal cells pose difficulties in t...

Harvesting of freshwater microalgae with microbial bioflocculant: a pilot-scale study

BACKGROUND Nowadays, bioflocculation is considered as a potential technology that could be able to alleviate microalgae dewatering cost regarded as the cornerstone hindrance of their full-scale application. However, most bioflocculation studies reported are laboratory scales. This study examined a pilot-scale and in situ flocculation of freshwater microalgae Desmodesmus brasiliensis by microbia...

Separation efficiency of a vacuum gas lift for microalgae harvesting.

Low-energy and low-cost separation of microalgae from water is important to the economics of microalgae harvesting and processing. Flotation under vacuum using a vacuum gas lift for microalgae harvesting was investigated for different airflow rates, bubble sizes, salinities and harvest volumes. Harvesting efficiency (HE) and concentration factor (CF) of the vacuum gas lift increased by around 5...
